Follow Your Heart?

Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Has anyone ever told you to just follow your heart? Maybe they told you to let your heart be your guide, or to trust your heart. It’s all a matter of feelings and ties in with the old saying, “If it feels good, do it.” Our hearts, or feelings, can get us into trouble if they don’t line up with God’s will for our lives. The Bible is very clear about this matter.

Proverbs 28:26
He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

Our hearts can change. What we want one day may not be what we want the next. It’s impossible to have any peace while trying to follow an uncertain leader. There is no fulfillment if the goal is constantly changing. Instead of following our hearts, the Bible instructs us to guide them.

Proverbs 23:19
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

We are told to guide our hearts in the way. In what way? In the way of the Lord. God never changes, so His goals and objectives never change. The only true peace and fulfillment we can experience in this life is when we forsake the things this world has to offer and follow Him.

Matthew 6:19-21
19  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Where we devote our time, energy, money, and other resources is where our heart will be. That’s how we are to guide our hearts.
